Together with Alpaca Logistics Europe, we have successfully carried out the first alpaca export to mainland Europe (Finland and Germany). This was achieved by taking the alpacas via Rosslare in Ireland and then on to France. It was a straightforward process and the alpacas travelled very well.
Now that the UK has left the European Union, exporting is becoming easier and here are some new points to highlight:
1. Rosslare in Ireland is accepting alpacas through their border and into the EU. Hoek van Holland is reported to have their border control post open any day and this will allow for a much cheaper way of sending stock to mainland Europe.
2. VAT is NO LONGER added to the sale, regardless if the buyer in the EU is registered for VAT or not.
3. The buyer will need to arrange to pay VAT when the alpaca enters to the EU via a customs agent.
4. The UK has 3rd country status meaning that the same Export Health Requirements and similar certificate is used.
5. Both the seller and the buyer now need to have a customs agent to produce customs documents (UK side) and clear customs at a designated border crossing (buyer). Here is Inca Alpaca, we use James Cargo Services (JCS) as our customs agent.
6. EU exports can be ready for transport in as little as 3 weeks after agreement is made.
